After Washington state came in 32nd out of 36 states in the national Race to the Top competition, members of the education community wanted to develop a more comprehensive and effective education plan than what had been submitted and engage the public in the discussion.
With significant input from educators, parents, community members, business leaders and others, the statewide Excellent Schools Now Coalition, managed by Strategies 360, developed a six-year education plan for the state called A+ Washington. Strategies 360 oversaw a communications, outreach and engagement effort across the state. The scope of the outreach for this kind of issue was unprecedented with more than 100 events held — including at least one in each of Washington’s 49 legislative districts, a dozen tele-townhalls collectively boasting tens of thousands of participants, support from every major newspaper across the state, a successful paid media strategy, and a topic of discussion on the gubernatorial campaign trail.
Many of the elements of A+ Washington are now part of statewide education policy, and the campaign has activated many new voices who advocate for all students to graduate college and career-ready.
